No Skype, Angry Birds, Tango & PES on Lumia 610

Lumia 610 has always been in news: from pre-launch till date, for various reasons. Although Windows Nokia suggests that the handset is well optimized for the 256 MB RAM and 800 MHz processor.

Recently Nokia Lumia 610 was in news for the wrong reason. The phone does not support Skype, video calling app Tango, famous Angry Birds and the football games PES on the handset.

Looking back to the days when Microsoft declared that only 5% of apps in the marketplace will not install on Tango handsets. Little was known that the best apps will fall in the category of this 5%, which could not be installed. Well, not that we know, we would only expect fair business with all the facts mentioned while purchasing the phone. This is tantamount to launching a phone just for the sake of it. Nokia has made great many errors during the Symbian days when it would senselessly release phone that were not upto the mark as per the market demand. With Windows Phone coming into the picture and a new leader taking charge, we had speculated that this “fever”of Nokia will finally die down. But we had speculated wrongly.

Samsung is doing a good job by keeping the galaxy lineup up to the mark. All low end Galaxies get the same treatment. Same goes wit the mid-end and high end Galaxies. With Lumia 610 and promises made by Nokia, we wonder if we are we asking too much?

Focus 2 arrives at AT&T, LTE-equipped Mango on sale for $49.99

When Samsung unveiled the Focus 2 at the CTIA, the long awaited “Mandel” saw light again. Only to be released a couple of weeks later on AT&T.

The Focus 2 packs a 1.4GHz single-core CPU, 4 inch 480×800 WVGA Super AMOLED, 5 megapixel camera and a 1750mAH batter. But sadly, the phone is available only in Glossy pure white. Another drawback is that the phone packs only 8GB of non expandable memory.

The Focus 2 is an alternative to those at AT&T who want Mango and LTE both, as Lumia 800 does not have LTE. But for $49.99, we don’t feel the specs are a deal breaker.

Nokia has reigned for 14 years since 1998, when it became the World’s largest handset maker. Nokia overtook Motorola and now it’s time for Samsung to rule the throne.

According to a Reuter’s poll of analysts, the end of Q1 marks the end of the Nokia reign. Samsung is victorious at 88 million devices in comparison to 83 million of Nokia. Although the margin is not huge, the loss of the top spot impact on Nokia is yet to be unraveled.

Let us wait till 27-April for the final Q1 numbers from Samsung and the official announcements for the rise of the new leader.

This is Lumia 900- in the teardown performed by the market research firm- IHS iSuppli.

The teardown determined the cost required to build the phone is $209.Now, this is the reason for the launch cost of $99.

Comparison between Nokia Lumia 900 and Samsung Galaxy SII –

The credit of the low material cost goes to Nokia, Microsoft and Qualcomm. The processor was only $17 vs $22 used in the Android phones and 512 MB RAM vs 1GB used in the commonly used Android handsets. The cheaper Bluetooth saved $2.50 vs newer ones of the Android handsets.

Microsoft lowered the prices of Windows Phone OS considerably to $5 from $15 to make Nokia Lumia 900 phone available at $209.

Not much of a difference in the BOM of the two, but a big difference in retail price. Sammy can take a few hints from Nokia on pricing though…!!

…I would like to point out Nokia Lumia 800 which is new on the list and goes straight into 6th place which is an indication that Nokias new smartphone is well received in the market. I also would like to address Samsung’s Galaxy Note, that is representing a new segment for smartphones. Note’s size opens for interesting discussions on how phones and work tools will be designed size wise for the coming years. I can see that there is a lot of demand from the market for carrying solutions when the devices become larger, and that it also demands new innovative ideas.

Seems like Nokia is all up for a fight. Also, the Note, the strongest smartphone of em all is giving a tough fight to the top dogs. In my opinion, the Sammy Android lineup will occupy most of the positions in the coming months.

Nokia to face tough competition on 2012

You may well call it the year when the world will end, but that would not solve the woes of Nokia.

Nokia, which has ditched Symbian and the utterly promising MeeGo for the Windows Phone OS plans to launch Windows Phones in China in the first half of 2011. But jaw breaking competition exists in the form of Samsung and HTC in high end segment and ZTE, Huawei Device and Lenovo in the mid-low end segment.

According to Digitimes

Although Nokia has launched its Mango phones in Europe and a number of markets in Asia, it has not yet introduced the models into China, the largest single market for Nokia, as it needs time to integrate the phones with local mobile network services in China, the sources indicated….

Furthermore, Microsoft plans to lower the hardware specifications for smartphones running on its Tango OS – a move which is likely to encourage China-based handset makers to bring out low-priced Tango phones to compete with Nokia Lumia phones, the sources added.

That makes two things pretty clear – Nokia is late here, as usual, and lowering of the Tango hardware specifications means that it will definitely hurt where it hurts most.

Ouch…!!!

Apple still leads when it comes to mobile loyalty, followed by Android and RIM

Apple surely has a brand loyalty that every CEO yearns for. According to a research published by GfK,

Some 84 percent of iPhone users said they would pick iPhone also when they replace their cellphone, while 60 percent of consumers who use smartphones running Google’s Android said they would stick with phones using the same software.

Only 48 percent of people using Research In Motion’s cellphones said they would stay loyal to their BlackBerrys, the study showed.

While Apple is the leader at present, the current development on Android, RIM’s BBX and Windows Phones from Nokia are all set to give Apple a tough challenge, according to the report.

The scope for brands to lure customers from rivals has diminished and the richest rewards will go to those providers that can create the most harmonious user experience and develop this brand loyalty

What is noteworthy here that 70 percent of consumers said they would stick with their phones due to their seamless integration of features and access to content. The present and future undoubtedly belongs to the Apps and Internet.

Though the firm interviewed around 4500 people in various countries, it never mentions anything about Symbian or Windows Phones. This is quite surprising as a certain percentage of these 4500 people must be carrying Symbian and Windows phones, which the report fails to mention.

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech has conducted a research on smartphone platforms in the UK and have found out that around half of the UK smartphones have Android of one kind or the other on them.

Android’s share has increased from 29 percent a year ago to 49.9 percent. HTC is leading the way for phone manufacturers using the OS, with 45 percent of Android-based phone sales in the 12 weeks prior to 2 October. Samsung took 38 percent of Android sales with Sony Ericsson contributing 8.5 percent, down from 20.5 percent a year ago.

RIM’s BlackBerry OS is the next most popular smartphone OS, present on 22.5 percent of UK smartphones while Apple’s iOS has 18.5 percent market share, down from 33 percent a year ago. Kantar’s figures were taken before Apple announced the iPhone 4S, a period during which Apple CEO Tim Cook said there had been a significant slowdown of iPhone sales.

While Nokia plummeted from 20 percent last year to 6 percent this year, It’s hopes to gain momentum through the Windows Phone is bleak as Windows Phone managed to bad only a measly 1.4 percent share.

The “bad news for featurephones” is that under half of the UK population (44 percent) owns smartphones, with the growth in sales quickly accelerating. Smartphones made up 69 percent of mobile phone sales during the period.

IDC has reveled the numbers for the Q3 mobile phone shipments. And as unexpected by few, Nokia is still numero uno.

According to the report

Nokia reversed a global market share on a sequential basis last quarter thanks to stronger feature phone sales in key regions as well as the clearing of inventory backlogs in traditional strongholds, namely China and Europe, which led to a sharp year-over-year shipment and share decline last quarter. Nokia’s smartphone fortunes could improve in quarters to come now that it has introduced the Nokia Lumia devices, powered by Windows Phone 7, to markets where its brand is still relatively strong and in areas where the company has lost share over the past two years.

Samsung registered double-digit growth compared to the third quarter a year ago and also outpaced the market. The company’s growth was again driven by smartphone sales, such as the Galaxy S2. Smartphone sales were notably higher in emerging markets including China. Samsung outpaced the feature phone market as well in terms of growth. The vendor didn’t close the market share gap on Nokia for the top mobile phone position, but it remains within striking distance.

LG Electronics maintained its position as the number 3 mobile vendor worldwide for the twelfth quarter in a row, but continued soft demand for both its feature phones and smartphones led to volume levels not seen since 2Q 2007. With only a few new devices launched and an aging feature phone portfolio, LG’s warnings of lower year-over-year shipment volume appears to have come to fruition. By the end of the year, LG’s grasp on the number 3 position may be loosened as Apple’s aggressive smartphone campaign takes hold in 4Q 2011.

ZTE jumped into the number 4 position thanks to momentum carried into 3Q 2011 with key devices shipping into strategic regions. In China, ZTE has nearly doubled its smartphone volumes from the previous quarter, while within North America, ZTE’s entry-level voice-centric phones at AT&T have gained greater depth. At the same time, ZTE’s target of 12 million smartphone shipments worldwide in 2011 became more of a reality with the introduction of two new Android-powered smartphones for the North American market.

Apple gained share and posted the third-highest growth rate of any Top 5 vendor but dropped to the number 5 position globally. Global iPhone shipments declined sequentially during the same quarter that company founder Steve Jobs handed the CEO reins to Tim Cook. The decline, not coincidentally, happened as Apple readied itself for the 4S launch, which many waited for. Apple’s ability to upgrade 3GS users to the 4S, for example, and make continued inroads into developing economies, where it has been less successful, will help dictate the company’s smartphone fortunes in the future.

The numbers speak for themselves. What should be noted in the chart below is that while LG is the biggest loser, the Biggest winner is ZTE, thanks to it’s featurephones sales. If featurephones are removed, then the champ would be Samsung, thanks to its baffling smartphone sales.

Samsung confirmed as number one smartphone manufacturer

Sammy, aka Samsung, has been able to pull the rabbit out of the hat. After burying Nokia under a pile of dirt, it has toppled Apple from the numero uno spot of smartphone manufacturers.

According to the research firm Strategy Analytics,

Samsung shipped 28 million smartphones in Q3 for a 24 percent market share, ahead of both Apple (17.1 million, 15 percent) and Nokia (16.8 million, 14 percent). Total global smartphone shipments grew 44 percent annually to reach a record 117 million. However, that growth is almost half that of a year ago, when smartphone growth during Q3 2010 was recorded at 78 percent.

Neil Mawston, Director at Strategy Analytics said

Apple’s global smartphone growth rate slowed to just 21 percent annually in Q3 2011, its lowest level for two years.

We believe Apple’s growth during the third quarter was affected by consumers and operators awaiting the launch of the new iPhone 4S in the fourth quarter, volatile economic conditions in several key countries, and tougher competition from Samsung’s popular Galaxy S2 model.

It is, however, interesting to know that despite of getting it’s butt whipped by other players, Nokia is still the undisputed king of phones.

The top three overall spots belong to Nokia (106.6 million, 27% market share), Samsung (88 million, 23%) and LG (21.1 million, 5.4%).

Since the unveiling of Windows Phones, let us see what the “quarters” have up in their sleeves for Nokia.

Windows Phone launched in India

Windows phones have been available in India from quite some time, but without any official support or Marketplace access. Today is the day when the Windows Phone Mango is officially launched in India.

According to Times of India

Microsoft India has unveiled its second Windows Phone 7.5 smartphone, HTC Radar, in India. The device runs on the most recent version of Windows Phone code-named Mango.

…The smartphone is priced at Rs 23,999…

Microsoft claims to have added over 500 new features in Windows Phone 7.5. Of these the key additions are: Custom ringtones, visual voicemail, new speech commands, Linked inboxes, conversation view in email, multitasking, video sharing, picture tagging, Smart DJ and sync with SkyDrive.

And

…Another Windows Phone 7.5 phone unveiled recently is Samsung Omnia W i8350. The smartphone is priced at Rs 19,990.

Finally the Indian Windows Phone users will be able to be at par with rest of the world. The average Indian customer knows that it is not the app store anymore. It’s the number of quality apps, the user experience and the integration of the device with other devices and services. And Windows Phone supposedly offers all this in a single package.

Occasional Gamer, a website that publishes stats on games played on smartphones has published a rather odd, according to me, list.

Apart from a number of phones on which games like Impossible racer, Nom Nom Worm, Fishing Girl et al are run, we were able to spot a gang of Nokia Phones. See for yourselves

The numbers besides the Phone name represent the number of phones the game was played on.

Now IMHO Nokia Sea Ray, Nokia 800 and Nokia Lumia should be different phones. Because it makes no sense to have 3 different names for one device. But keeping in mind Nokia’s past to conceal it’s upcoming phones, this could be a new tactic to make the whole leak game more “fuzzy”.

There is also a mysterious device from Nokia that doesn’t have a name yet, or probably it’s name is indeed XXX.

We can also find Samsung Monument in the chart. If this is a new device altogether or just an upgrade or a different carrier phone is yet to be known.

Smartphone sales surpass featurephone sales in West Europe says IDC

The world is moving at the smartphone world at an amazing pace. Seems that featurephones would be the next extinct species, at least in the Europe.

For the first time in Q2 this year, as IDC reports,

…Feature phone shipments in the region were down 29 percent to 20.4 million units in 2Q11, while smartphone shipments increased 48 percent to 21.8 million units from a year ago.

…Smartphones now account for 52 percent of total mobile phone shipments in the region. The total Western European mobile phone market, however, declined 3 percent year-on-year to 42.2 million units in the quarter

…Feature phones are becoming a niche segment driven by the very-low-end devices targeted at users who only need a device for voice and texts…

Android is the biggest winner in the smartphone-featurephone war. With Android phones, recording a massive growth of 352% YoY, accounted for 48.5% of the total smartphone sales. Samsung has bolstered Android’s success by being the biggest manufacturer of Android Smartphones, thanks to the Galaxy devices.

The biggest loser here is Nokia. with a drop of 60% in it’s sales. The cause is undoubtedly the move from EU’s OS, Symbian.

Even the troubled RIM has managed to record a 15% growth.

Not much to add here as the sales figures speak out loud enough.
