Apparently, someone at Microsoft lies – as the Chinese carrier China Mobile was just unveiled as the launch partner for the new browser. Guess what the launch device will be: a Samsung Omnia.

According to ZDNet, Microsoft’s Scott Rockfeld stated the following:

…, China Mobile intends to make Internet Explorer (IE) 6 for Windows Mobile available to its customers on its Samsung Omnia phones.

Rockfeld said Microsoft intends to announce the China Mobile partnership today at Mobile Asia Congress being held in Macau.

If these Omnia devices will drop with Windows Mobile 6.1, I see no reason whatsoever why the browser can not be ported “downwards” with relative ease. IMHO, it’s a problem of Microsoft not wanting rather than not being able to offer the browser…we’ll see what they do when the XDA-Developers manage to “crack it”.
